Team USA won Olympic men’s hockey gold after edging past Canada 2–1 in overtime, sealing their first title in the event in more than four decades.

The United States men’s ice hockey team claimed Olympic gold after beating Canada 2–1 in overtime in the final of the Winter Olympics 2026 on Sunday, February 22, ending a 46-year wait for the title.
The match was decided early in overtime when Jack Hughes scored the winning goal from close range, sending the U.S. players into celebration. The game had been tied 1–1 at the end of regulation time.

This was the United States’ first Olympic men’s hockey gold since 1980, when the team won the historic “Miracle on Ice” match in Lake Placid. The victory marks only the third time the U.S. has won Olympic gold in men’s hockey.

Both teams traded goals during regulation. The Americans struck first in the opening period before Canada equalised later in the game to force extra time. The final remained tightly contested, with neither side able to gain control in the closing minutes.
U.S. goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck played a crucial role, making several saves as Canada pushed forward in the second and third periods. Canada created chances late in the game but could not convert them.
Canada, one of the strongest teams in international hockey, fell short in overtime despite a determined performance throughout the final.
When the final whistle sounded, American players gathered at centre ice before lifting the gold medal trophy, sealing a long-awaited Olympic triumph and adding a new chapter to their rivalry with Canada.
